Editorial: The Formation of the Top 10 Development Foundation

The tournament is the starting point. Our wider ambition is to help build the foundations South African basketball needs — on and off the court.

The Top 10 Tournament begins with a simple ambition: bring schools together, create meaningful competition and give young basketball players a platform to be seen. But our vision for the sport in South Africa stretches far beyond one tournament, one age group or one championship trophy.

From small and humble beginnings to elite competition, basketball depends on an entire ecosystem. If we want to help develop and rebuild the sport from the ground up, we have to look beyond the players on the court. We must also consider the people, places and structures that make it possible for them to play, improve and progress.

That is why we intend to establish the Top 10 Development Foundation as a non-profit organisation: to put the foundations in place for the work that really matters off the court.

A stronger game needs more than talented players

A young player needs somewhere safe to train. A coach needs opportunities to learn. Referees and table officials need preparation, practical experience and support. Schools and clubs need capable administrators, reliable information and well-organised competition.

None of these elements stands alone. A strong competition cannot make up for a missing development pathway. A promising player cannot progress on talent alone if the people and opportunities around them are absent.

Our ambition is to approach basketball as a connected whole — from a child's first experience of the game to the demands of higher-level competition.

The work behind the game

The proposed Foundation would provide a structure through which we can organise development work, build partnerships and pursue support responsibly.

The areas we want to address include:

  • Grassroots participation: helping more young people find a place in basketball, including those whose access to the game is limited.
  • Coaching and officiating: supporting the people who teach the game, uphold its standards and make competition possible.
  • Administration and organisation: strengthening the practical skills behind schools, clubs, programmes and events.
  • Player pathways: improving access to information and opportunities, without promising recruitment, scholarships or professional careers.
  • Facilities and resources: identifying what communities need to sustain participation, not simply host an occasional event.

These are not announcements of funded projects. They are priorities that explain why a dedicated organisation is needed.

Establishing the structure before making promises

Forming the Foundation is about more than giving our ambitions a name. It means working towards the governance, accountability, partnerships and practical plans needed to turn good intentions into consistent action.

We want to be able to explain what support is needed, how it will be used and what it achieves. We also want to listen to the schools, clubs, coaches, officials and communities already doing valuable work, rather than assume we have every answer.

The Foundation is in formation. Its establishment and formal arrangements still need to be completed. We will share progress as those steps are taken.

The tournament is a beginning, not the destination

The Top 10 Tournament gives us a place to start: a platform for competition, connection and a wider conversation about the future of basketball in South Africa.

The planned Foundation is about what happens beyond those tournament days — the preparation before a player arrives, the support around them and the opportunities that may follow.

Our ambition is not only to stage better basketball. It is to help create the conditions in which better basketball can grow.
