The Right Court. The Next Chapter: A Stage for Life Beyond School

For a young basketball player approaching the end of high school, the question is bigger than the next result. What happens when the school jersey comes off for the last time? Where will he study, train and compete? And how will the people who could help shape that next chapter get to see what he can do?
That is why inviting top university coaches, scouts and recruiters to Top 10 Tournament is an important part of what we are building. From 2–4 December 2026 at Mandeville Sports Club, Johannesburg, the inaugural U19 boys tournament is intended to be more than a contest for a trophy. It is a platform where strong school teams can test themselves, and where players can put meaningful evidence of their ability in front of a wider basketball audience.
Being on the right court at the right time is valuable. Being ready when you get there is what gives that opportunity meaning.
A pathway needs visibility
Talent does not always reach the right people on its own. A player can work hard, contribute to his school and have the ambition to go further, yet still lack the footage, exposure or conversations that help him take the next step.
Top 10 brings public and private schools into a shared national showcase. Against strong opposition, players have an opportunity to show how their skills translate beyond familiar fixtures: how they make decisions under pressure, defend a difficult match-up, contribute without the ball and respond when the game stops going their way.
For an invited school, committing to this tournament is therefore about more than three days of basketball. It is an opportunity to place the team, its coaching work and its players on a stage that can carry their story beyond the school season.
Courtside is not the only way to be seen
We are inviting university coaches, scouts and recruiters to engage with the tournament. Invitations are not confirmations of attendance, and we will only announce individual guests once their participation is confirmed and they have agreed to be named.
We also recognise that the USSA tournament overlaps with our dates. University coaches have commitments to their own teams. Our invitation respects those commitments: visit Mandeville between games where practical, or follow the tournament remotely.
All games will be livestreamed and shared on our official YouTube channel, @top10tournament. Full match recordings give coaches and recruiters a way to watch beyond a short highlight reel, revisit a performance and follow players even when they cannot be in Johannesburg. The opportunity to be seen need not end with the final buzzer.
More than good game statistics
A scoring total tells part of the story. It does not show every defensive rotation, every intelligent pass or every moment of composure. Coaches evaluating a player for the next level may also look at his decisions, effort, communication and willingness to learn.
How do you react after a turnover? Do you sprint back? Can you take instruction without making excuses? Do you encourage a teammate when you are on the bench? Do you keep working when your shot is not falling?
Players: do not wait for a spectacular play to make your case. Build it possession by possession. It is time to lock in. This is more than lacing up to play another game. Prepare to show the habits that a future coach would want in his programme.
A record that lasts beyond December
Full games, per-game statistics and lasting player profiles are central to the Top 10 vision. Together, they can give a player a more useful record of his contribution than an isolated scoreline or a few clips on a phone. Public player information and photographs remain subject to the tournament’s publication and consent requirements.
That record can support future conversations with university programmes and other basketball pathways. It gives players and their school coaches something concrete to reference: not simply “he can play”, but “here is how he played against strong opposition”.
For parents and school coaches
For parents, the value is not a promise of a scholarship. It is a serious opportunity for your son to compete, be visible and begin understanding the demands of life beyond school basketball. Academic preparation, admission requirements and finding the right environment remain just as important as athletic ambition.
For school coaches, this is a chance to show the development work behind the team and help players prepare for conversations about their future. Encourage them to know their academic goals, understand their strengths and speak honestly about what they still need to improve.
No tournament can guarantee selection, recruitment, a scholarship or a professional career. What we can do is build a credible stage, invite relevant people to watch and create ways for performances to remain accessible afterwards.
The championship is only the beginning
The final ten teams are still being selected. The ambition is clear: a demanding national school competition with a purpose that reaches beyond the podium.
We want players, coaches and parents to see Top 10 as a potentially significant step towards what comes next — a place where ability can be tested, character can be seen and a young player’s next chapter can start to take shape.
Players: be seen. Be ready. Make the opportunity count.
