Investing in Our Coaches: We Will Build It Ourselves

Every great player has a coach behind them. The coach who opened the gym early, broke down film late at night and taught a fifteen-year-old how to play the game the right way. If we want South African basketball to grow, we have to invest continually, in time and in resources, in the people who develop our players every day.

We cannot wait for someone else

For too long the development of coaches in South Africa has been left to chance. We cannot wait for someone else to come and do it for us. We will do it for ourselves.

Many high school coaches across the country give their evenings and weekends to the game, yet are not yet certified. They have the passion and the commitment. What they need is structured, recognised training and the support to keep learning.

Top 10 Development in 2027

In 2027 Top 10 Tournament will launch Top 10 Development, a programme built around our coaches:

• Specialised coaching clinics focused on skills development, player development and game preparation.
• Coaching workshops covering practice planning, team systems, FIBA rules and the demands of modern school basketball.
• A national certification course, hosted by Top 10 Tournament, so that coaches leave with a recognised qualification and the confidence to raise the standard of their programmes.

Developing the game for the future

Better coaches create better players, stronger school programmes and a more competitive national game. Certifying our high school coaches is how we will develop the game and grow skills for the future, from the youngest junior teams to the U16 and U19 stages of the Top 10 Tournament.
